  • eBay Giving Works Charity Ribbon Virtual Yard Sale

  • Whether you call it a tag sale, garage sale, rummage sale, or holiday bazaar, it’s time to forget the hassles of card tables and price stickers. Take your yard sale fundraiser into the 21st century with eBay Giving Works.
  • Why do it?

Instead of putting out your merchandise on the lawn, list it on eBay and enjoy a wider audience likely to bid up the prices of your items. Plus the sale will last for several days instead of a few hours. Oh yeah, did we mention it’s guaranteed to never get rained out?
  • How it works

Here are the 6 easy steps to holding a virtual yard sale with eBay Giving Works:
  • 1. Get help onboard
  • 2. Collect good stuff to sell
  • 3. Write descriptions and take photos
  • 4. List items with eBay Giving Works
  • 5. Spread the word
  • 6. Ship items
  • Virtual yard sale step-by-step:

    Get help onboard
A virtual yard sale can be a fun way to engage supporters and give them a new way to get involved. Ask your volunteers to lend their time to help with the remaining tasks. Need more help? Many schools and clubs require students and participants to fulfill a certain number of volunteer hours. Find helping hands at local organizations, on Craigslist.org and VolunteerMatch.org.
  • If you don't have enough hours in your day to organize your volunteers and learn the nuts and bolts of selling on eBay, consider letting someone else do the work by hiring a Trade Assistant or Auction Management Agency.
  • Collect good stuff to sell
Ask your supporters to clean out their attics, garages, and closets then bring their items to you. Check in with local businesses to see if they have overstock or out-of-season merchandise they’d like to donate. To boost interest, be sure to give everyone a tax-receipt for their donation.
  • Ready, set, list!
Closely inspect those items that were donated. For the ones in good shape, get ready to list them. For every category of item, eBay has handy tips to make selling more successful.
  • Write descriptions and take photos
Write colorful, informative descriptions of your items. Don’t forget to mention any scratches or wear-and-tear there might be. A solid description will increase your chances of successfully selling.
  • Select a volunteer to be your in-house photographer. He or she should take photos of each item. Since the buyer won’t be able to see your item in person, taking clear photos is essential.
  • List items with eBay Giving Works
Make sure the eBay ID you are using to list is included under "My Direct Sellers" in your MissionFish account before you begin listing. This is so MissionFish and eBay know you are a Direct Seller—and won’t try to process donations after your items sell.
  • List your items with eBay’s Sell Your Item form. Select your nonprofit and "100%" as the donation amount in the "Choose How You’d Like to Sell Your Item" section.
  • Spread the Word
Once your listings are up, let the promotion begin! Put a link on your site to your About My Nonprofit Page, where all of your live eBay Giving Works listings automatically appear. This will make one-stop shopping for your supporters a breeze.
  • Send the link to your organization’s email list and write a press release for local media outlets.
  • If you have a MySpace or Facebook page, include a link there as well.
  • See more promotional ideas here.
  • Shipping
Once an item sells, get ready to ship it. Double-check that you have received payment from a buyer prior to shipping. Package items carefully.
  • In every package you send out, include some literature about your organization with information about how the buyer can continue to support your fantastic work.
  • Once the transaction is completed, leave feedback for the buyer.
  • Wrap up
When your event is fully wrapped up, discuss with your volunteers what went well and what could be improved upon. Then start planning your next virtual yard sale.

  • Quotes From Our Users
  • AIDCHILD"eBay Giving Works is a wonderful blessing in our efforts to care for orphans living with AIDS in Uganda, East Africa. The ease with which money is deposited into our bank account means no administrative costs for us -- just money for medication and food. Amazing." --Nathaniel Dunigan, Founder and Director, AidChild
