Donation deduction policy
- MissionFish retains a small portion of each Community Seller and Donate Now donation processed to offset credit card fees and other operating expenses. Because we're a nonprofit, this portion (which we call "the donation deduction") is necessary in order for our organization to operate.
- The donation deduction for Community Seller donations is based on the size of an individual Community Seller donation: our percentage gets smaller as the donation gets bigger. We never take more than 20% of any donation, and our average share of all donations processed is approximately 10%.
- The deduction for Donate Now donations is 3.75% of the amount given. The Donate Now feature is cheaper and easier for us to offer, so we can afford to keep less of each gift.
- In either case, our deduction is cheaper for the nonprofit than almost any other comparable option. Our deduction for Donate Now is one of the lowest processing rates anywhere for online gifts.
- Community Seller donations made by Credit Card, Debit Card or PayPal
The table below shows how much MissionFish retains from a Community Seller donation made by credit card, debit card or PayPal:
- Community Seller donations made by Check or EFT
MissionFish allows Community Sellers to make their donations by bank-certified check or electronic funds transfer (EFT), when the total donation due is $1,000.00 or greater. The table below shows the specific amount that MissionFish keeps from a donation made by check or EFT:

How does it compare?
- The BBB Wise Giving Alliance
recommends that nonprofits spend less than 35% of their overall income on fundraising expenses. Our share – 10% for Community Selling and 3.75% for Donate Now - is well below that standard. - Our share is also less than what many nonprofits pay for comparable fundraising activities, for things like:
- Credit card and monthly service fees for donation processing on their own website.
- Printing, postage and mailing lists for a direct mail fundraising appeal.
- Marketing and consulting costs for a capital campaign.
