The donation deduction
- Because we're a nonprofit, we keep a small deduction from each donation* to offset the costs of processing millions of transactions a year, and to provide legal and financial infrastructure that makes it possible.
- Amongst other expenses, we incur costs in:
- Certifying nonprofits that wish to register for our fundraising programs.
- Collecting, processing, accounting for and passing on millions of donations every year to thousands of US nonprofits.
- Providing customer support and advice to nonprofits and to donors to ensure their fundraising is successful.
- Helping nonprofits manage their use of eBay Giving Works, including tracking their donations and vetting new listings.
- We also incur general costs associated with running a nonprofit, such as audits, travel expenses and occasional legal advice.
- The amount we keep doesn't cover all of our expenses, but every bit helps. Because MissionFish is a program of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, 100% of each donation we receive is still tax-deductible for the donor (including our deduction).
- *Please note that we do not keep a deduction when Nonprofit Direct Sellers sell on their own behalf.
- How much do you keep?
- We never keep more than 5% of a donation. A detailed breakdown of our deductions can be found in our Expenses Policy.
